Spoken Word LIVE: MEDIA
Your Story, Your Power, Your Platform
What's up, everyone? Joshua T. Berglan here, with a recap of an impromptu but incredibly powerful **Spoken Word LIVE** broadcast. Sometimes, inspiration strikes, a fire ignites, and you just have to go live – even if it's earlier than planned! Today, the word drawn from the bottle was **MEDIA**, and it led to a conversation that I believe is crucial for every single one of us.
The Unbeatable Edge of Going Live for Content Creators
One of my favorite things about going live is the sheer efficiency. As soon as a broadcast like this is done, the content can be repurposed almost instantly. From YouTube link to clips via Opus, to a full blog post and newsletter content – my production time has shrunk from hours to minutes.
For content creators out there, especially those looking to maximize their impact without getting bogged down in endless editing, I can't recommend going live enough. It's a game-changer for getting your message out efficiently and authentically.
My personal goal is to use technology wisely, then step away. This approach allows me to create content that feels natural, heartfelt, and unscripted, rather than reading from a teleprompter.
From Personal Struggle to Media Mogul: The Birth of a Platform
My journey into media was born out of necessity and a powerful realization. After a series of brand deals fell through, leaving me without the income I desperately needed, I realized I had no choice but to go "all in" on myself and my vision.
It started with a friend's simple advice: "Joshua, you need to document your journey. Share how you are overcoming." At that time, I was fresh out of jail for the sixth time, navigating mental health challenges, and feeling completely lost. But I started sharing on Facebook Live. Slowly, people began asking to join the screen, and I began asking them what they were grateful for. It wasn't a show, but it was authentic connection.
Then, a lightbulb moment: I flipped my phone sideways. It looked like TV. "Oh my gosh, I'm going to turn this into a TV show!" From there, an obsession with distribution began. I couldn't compete with marketing budgets, so I had to find a way to get my message out everywhere. Facebook, YouTube, podcasts – I learned that the process for creating apparel was similar to making a YouTube video, and skincare distribution wasn't so different from film distribution.
Little by little, I learned every step of media: speaking on stage, writing books, producing movies, acting, commercials, event production. It all clicked during a Super Bowl commercial shoot, surrounded by film trucks and businesses. I realized I was learning every part of media, and the question became: "How do I become a one-person media company?" This led to the creation of **Media Company in a Box**.
Media: A Vehicle for Healing, Purpose, and the Creator's Economy
Media became more than just a tool for me; it became a vehicle for healing. It helped me get comfortable with the truth, even when airing out my struggles with mental illness and disassociation publicly. This raw honesty prepared me, and now others, for the world to come.
We are living in the **Creator's Economy**. While job loss and eroding norms can be frightening, this era offers an amazing opportunity to return to basics: the creator created us to create. Media is the vehicle to deliver those natural gifts and talents.
My own media organization was built around my testimony – how I overcame. This story led to books, movies, and countless opportunities, and now I teach others the same. Media empowers those without traditional education or finances to start a business, putting power directly into their hands.
Your Story: The Ultimate Superpower for Creativity
Media is not just about revenue streams; it's about purpose. If we are all living in our unique purpose, we don't have time for hatred, judgment, or racism. Instead, we celebrate differences, because that's where true creativity thrives. Truth is the ultimate superpower. You have endless stories, and endless ways to get them out.
Media can be the delivery mechanism for love and compassion, bringing communities and families back together. A family that creates together will stay together. In a world where technology is rapidly changing, the ability to leverage media to share your truth and gifts will be essential.

Media for Social Impact and Underserved Communities
My passion for media deepened after witnessing the events surrounding George Floyd's murder in Minneapolis. Learning about gentrification, redlining, shadow prisons, and civil commitment revealed how the system is rigged against many underserved groups. While mainstream media often pits us against each other, we can use the power of media to create our own narratives centered around truth and storytelling.
I started giving away media services for free, driven by a heart to spread the gospel of media's power. Imagine single moms, victims of human trafficking, or those unjustly incarcerated – media can be their vehicle to be heard, to heal, and to find purpose. It can make sense out of pain and suffering, offering hope where there was none.
