UnMasking Humanity: 21 Questions with Joshua T Berglan featuring Melissa Georgeoff

In a world where authenticity often takes a backseat to performance, Melissa Georgeoff stands out as a beacon of genuine leadership and compassion. As the latest guest on Joshua T Berglan's "UnMasking Humanity: 21 Questions," Melissa shared insights from her remarkable journey in corporate America, her passion for helping people with disabilities, and her new ventures in coaching and podcasting.

    A Journey of Authentic Leadership

Melissa's story is one of perseverance and growth. Coming from humble beginnings, she climbed the corporate ladder without a college degree, eventually becoming the only woman on a senior leadership team for 24 years. Her experience has given her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by women in the workplace and the importance of authentic leadership.

"I never had a woman mentor my whole career," Melissa revealed. This lack of female mentorship fueled her passion for helping other women navigate the corporate world. She emphasized the importance of investing in mid-level managers, particularly women, who are often overlooked in leadership development programs.

    Advocating for People with Disabilities

Throughout her career, Melissa has been a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. Her work in the medical device industry and with health plans has given her firsthand experience of the challenges faced by individuals needing complex rehab technology and durable medical equipment.

One of the most touching moments of the interview was when Melissa shared a story about going above and beyond for a client. She traveled to Oklahoma to meet a mother and child who couldn't afford a special bathtub. Moved by their situation, Melissa and her brother worked together to build and donate a custom tub, allowing the child to have a proper bath for the first time in months.

This story exemplifies Melissa's commitment to making a real difference in people's lives. "I just can't believe we're in the United States of America and that people with disabilities have to fight for what they need," she said, highlighting the ongoing need for advocacy and education in this area.

The SEE THE UNSEEN Podcast and Coaching Program

Melissa's latest ventures include her "SEE THE UNSEEN" podcast and coaching program. These initiatives allow her to share her wealth of experience and help others overcome the challenges she's faced in her own career.

The podcast features a diverse range of guests, from individuals with disabilities who've achieved remarkable feats to singer-songwriters who deserve more recognition. "I want to bring visibility to people I care about and the things that I think are worth saying," Melissa explained.

Her coaching program focuses on empowering mid-level managers, particularly women, to develop their leadership skills. Topics include delegation, work-life balance, and overcoming limiting beliefs – all areas where Melissa has personal experience and insights to share.

    Faith, Family, and Finding Purpose

Throughout the interview, Melissa emphasized the importance of faith and family in her life. She shared how her relationship with God has deepened in recent years and how it guides her decisions and actions.

"Every day, I start with prayer," Melissa said, describing her morning routine. "I first of all just tell God that I love him, and then ask for forgiveness of my sins, specifically thank him for my family and all the blessings in my life, and then ask his holy spirit to come in and direct me and lead me in every which way."

This focus on faith has helped Melissa navigate recent career changes and find new purpose in her coaching and advocacy work. She sees her current path as an opportunity to make a positive impact and leave a lasting legacy.

    Lessons in Leadership and Life

Throughout the "21 Questions" format, Melissa shared valuable insights on leadership, personal growth, and making a difference:

    1. Authenticity is key: Melissa stressed the importance of being your authentic self, both in leadership roles and in life.
    2. Overcome limiting beliefs: Many of Melissa's coaching efforts focus on helping others push past self-imposed limitations.
    3. Advocate for others: Whether it's for people with disabilities or underrepresented groups in the workplace, Melissa encourages using your voice to help others.
    4. Embrace vulnerability: Being open about your struggles can help build trust and stronger relationships.
    5. Seek balance: Melissa emphasized the importance of putting faith and family first, even while pursuing career goals.
    6. Leave a legacy: Consider the impact you want to have and the memories you want to leave behind.

    Looking to the Future

As Melissa looks to the future, she remains open to new opportunities while staying true to her passions. She continues to consult in the mobility sector, helping companies improve their services for people with disabilities. Her coaching and podcast work allow her to share her experiences and help others grow in their careers and personal lives.

"My biggest goal is to make a difference in people's lives and to help the person maybe that I used to be and help them kind of overcome the things that I've already overcome in my life," Melissa said, summing up her mission.
